The Importance of “Backward by Design” in Creating Assessments

When was the last time you, teachers, were puzzled in creating assessments for your students?

Creating assessments can be a daunting task for teachers, as it is not only as a part of routines, but they may wonder if the assessments they create will meet the expected learning outcomes.

“In all limitations, every human must experience growth in all aspects of life, especially during teaching and learning process. It is inevitable that the purpose of assessments must play a significant role, as it has been determined from the beginning with the provision of various options. The purpose itself is not to be a trap that seems to “intentionally” lead students to failure, nor also a stage for teachers’ showing off. Creating assessments in advance is actually effective in helping the development and measuring the growth of each individual involved in the learning process.”

(Dr. Connie Rasilim)

Therefore, having a “Backward by Design” mindset is important when creating assessments for students. This means that creating assessments in advance can also be used as a measurement of the growth of each individual involved in the learning process, including students, teachers and other stakeholders.

To get started, the first step is to determine and understand the expected student profile. It is important to remember that the student profile should already be determined. Next, determine the assessment method and create learning experiences that are appropriate for the classroom context and suitable lesson plans.

After all of this is done, assessment will play its role in improving the quality of learning rather than just collecting students’ grades. It is important to review whether the assessment method is already on the right track towards the expected student profile, or if you want to make any necessary adjustments as needed..
